Re:Search Wednesday ft. The Geek x VRV w/ Lucid Vision, Mikey Thunder, Staxx, Jubee
Event on 2017-04-26 20:30:00
The DNA of the French band The Geek x VRV originates from their Beat Tapes “Back To Old School” (BTOS). A tribute to Hip-Hop & Soul classics, it’s the beginning of the story that shows the talent of these two beatmakers.
Their flagship track « It’s Because », released 3 years ago, comes directly from their first Beat Tape and lays the foundation for the The Geek x VRV’s sound today.
Three volumes of BTOS brought them to a first EP, ORIGAMI, on Embrace Records, a Sold Out Maroquinerie (Paris), 2 USA tours and French festivals in 2016. Finally, they presented their new live set up, with 360° video projection and a brass instrument section, in front of a Sold Out Gaîté Lyrique in January 2017.
Like a liberating step back, this new tape definitively returns to their musical roots. On March 3rd, The Geek x VRV will present BTOS VOL. 4, a selection of 15 tracks that summarises the desire for authenticity and an old school sound.
Spreading light through sound, Lucid Vision takes listeners to a melodic zone of soulful grooves and electronic-laced genre bends.By combining live guitar with the unique world of designed sound, Lucid Vision demonstrates a natural balance of live-electronic music. He loves to embody the party atmosphere, but also strays from norms by placing emphasis on the feeling and message of the music.
Mikey Thunder likes to party. But more than that, Mikey Thunder just so happens to be the party. Thunder spins a genre-blending, bass-driven partyrock, fusing banging electronic beats with funk, hip-hop, soul, jazz, blues, swing, reggae and anything else the party may call for on the fly. With 19 years in the game, he's mastered the art of improvisation with an uncanny ability to work with and rework the vibe of the party with precision. If you’re a true connoisseur of the Colorado music scene, you’ve seen Mikey share the stage with any number of your favorite artists- no matter the genre.
It all began for Mikey at the age of 15 when he discovered DJing in Springfield , Mass. Thru friends older brother's record collections and the Hiphop scene in the city. From there he moved up to Burlington Vt. and immersed himself in the diverse musical culture. In the fall of 1999, he relocated to the mountains of Jackson Hole where he was soon kidnapped by Michael Franti and Spearhead for the Stay Human Tour. After opening for Spearhead in Jackson Hole, Thunder was handpicked by Michael Franti to open the rest of the tour, where he mixed beats into their sets, during set break, and scratched with their beatboxer, Radioactive.
After the Spearhead tour Mikey relocated to Boulder and continued to pursue his musical career. At that time Thunder also was an Atari playing stuntman/ DJ in the band Sonar. The band shared the stage with the Wailers at the Winter Olympics in Salt Lake City, the String Cheese Incident, and played Hightimes Magazine’s SXSW party, and the Cannabis Cup in Amsterdam. In the fall of 2009 Mikey joined the Pretty Lights crew, opened for over 30 shows on their tours and performed cuts on the Making Up a Changing Mind EP, released in 2010. He also has played the sold out Red Rocks Amphitheater runs with PL in 2012/13/14.
Since that time, he has made his presence known in every single facet of the Colorado music industry. Over the years he has shared the stage with an extremely diverse range of musicians, including (but certainly not limited to): Bassnectar, The Glitch Mob, The Disco Biscuits, Boombox, Soul Live, Lettuce, The Motet, Michal Menert, Nightmares on Wax, Mr. Scruff, DJ Krush, Bonobo, Z Trip, DJ Qbert, Pete Rock, DJ Premier, Jurassic 5, Slick Rick, Method Man, Raekwon, Ghostface killa, Red Man, Juicy J, and Big Boi of Outkast. Additionally, he has been prominently featured on such festivals as Shambhala, Sonic Bloom, Snowball, Global Dance Festival, and many others.
Mikey Thunder’s true talent lies in his versatility. Every Thunder performance presents something familiar in an entirely unfamiliar way, as well as something unfamiliar presented in a way that is immediately recognizable as Thunder.
I live in a tiny home music studio deep in the backwoods and/or a van somewhere around the country, and love hip hop and dance music. Anything to make a booty shake. Makin beats every damn day. For best results, play this music with a subwoofer involved.
My influences have varied so much throughout my life, but my love for music has never changed and everything i've ever loved, i still have love for it to this day. My goal with music is to share the story of my life thru sounds. Use sounds from everything that has ever inspired me throughout my entire life, use recordings of all the friends just fucking around, sounds from tv shows i loved as a kid, songs I loved, sounds from my life. And I wanna tell the story in a way that is G as fuck, because when it comes down to it, HIP HOP is what got me to where I am today and will always be my biggest music influences. Hip hop is life.

Reason behind the name:
For the past 8 years i've made beats almost every day of my life, and done nothin with the beats but stack em up in my library. i feel like the time to really share has come. so i got the staxx.. Also, growing up as a kid my absolute favorite thing to do was stack legos, and stack lincoln logs, and create cool things with ideas that came straight from my head and turned in to real life. Now the concept is the same for me, but with sounds. So I'm digging up old and finding new inspiring sounds, vocals, recordings, anything neat, and start stackin em together. Also my life revolves around my family and friends, and when it comes to that, i got staxx! so staxx of sounds, staxx of friends, staxx of fun, staxx of love. <3
