Event on 2017-02-20 19:00:00
Jeff Lowenfels has been writing an award-winning garden column for the Anchorage Dispatch News for over forty years and is the founder of Plant a Row for the Hungry, a program that encourages all gardeners to donate one row to feed the hungry.

Jeff will discuss his new book, Teaming with Fungi: The Organic Grower's Guide to Mycorrhizae.

Long misunderstood and even scorned by gardeners, fungi are now known to play a crucial role in the success of most plants. In a mutually beneficial exchange, host plants supply necessary carbon to the mycorrhizal fungi, and in return, the fungi help roots obtain and absorb critical water and nutrients. The interaction is so complex that only recently have scientists been able to unravel the intricate processes involved.

With his gift for making detailed concepts both clear and engaging, Jeff Lowenfels explains why mycorrhizal fungi are so important to growing operations as widely diverse as commercial-scale agriculture, hydroponic gardening, and legal cannabis cultivation—and everything in between.

Capitalizing on these valuable fungal relationships has become a proven strategy for growing success. Teaming with Fungi demonstrates how to apply the process’s core principles for healthier, hardier, better-performing plants.

Free, reservations are not required. Event starts at 7:00 pm with sign-in, light refreshments and a chance to mingle with fellow garden enthusiasts. Lectures begin at 7:30 pm. For more information, please call 240.505.0598.
