Brick and mortar stores will continue to exist, but there will be fewer of them and the reason for their existence will be different: entertainment and engagement. Speakers Shawn Gold Corporate Marketing Officer TechStyle Fashion Group Shawn Gold has over 20 years of experience in communications planning, digital marketing, content strategy and revenue optimization for consumer-facing internet companies. He is currently corporate marketing officer at TechStyle Fashion Group, an industry leading platform to build hi-value membership driven fashion brands. TechStyle brands include Fabletics, JustFab, ShoeDazzle and FabKids. Before TechStyle he was head of entertainment brand partnerships at Wattpad.com, the world’s largest storytelling platform and one of the fastest growing mobile content sites in the world. Previously he oversaw sales, marketing and content development as CMO of Inside Studios, a video and mobile app company creating shows with over 1 billion views on YouTube and MSN. Until 2007, he was CMO, head of marketing & content for MySpace. At MySpace Gold spearheaded the development and implementation of marketing initiatives and campaigns for MySpace during its growth from 25 to 110 million users worldwide. Prior to MySpace he was a partner and the founding publisher of Weblogs, Inc., a network of popular blogs that included Engadget, Joystiq and Autoblog, now part of AOL. As head of communications planning for Rare Medium, Shawn helped launch digital communications strategies for brands at P&G, General Mills, Nestle, Mattel and other international brand marketing companies. Dr. Dan Duran Associate Professor of Business Administration Whittier College Dr. Duran is a tenured associate professor of business administration at Whittier College where he teaches Sustainable Development, International Business, and other courses. He is also the founder and president of Energized Solutions, LLC, a California-based consulting firm that provides environmental consulting services primarily in the energy and water sectors to utilities, city/county agencies, and private firms. Some of his past and current clients include Southern California Edison (SCE), Sempra, Avery Dennison, Central Basin Water District, Metropolitan Water District (MWD), Southern California Gas Company, Navigant, Disney Resorts, and the California Public Utilities Commission (CPUC). Prior to joining Whittier College and starting Energized Solutions he served as a senior executive and manager with SCE, Sempra, AT&T, NEC, and SAIC. Kyle Ransford CEO Chef'd Kyle Ransford is a proven entrepreneur who has successfully started several businesses, including Cardinal Investments and was founder and executive chairman of Bank of Manhattan. He has extensive investment banking experience having previously worked at Hoolihan Lokey and Halcyon Asset Management, LLC. Mr. Ransford has been on the other side of the transaction as well as having successfully raised more than M for his own startup companies. Christine Cooper, Ph.D. Regional Economist CoStar Group Christine Cooper, Ph.D. is regional economist for the CoStar Market Analytics team at CoStar Group, providing insights into macroeconomic conditions for the western United States. CoStar is the leading provider of commercial real estate information, analytics and online marketplaces, conducting ongoing research to produce and maintain the largest and most comprehensive database of commercial real estate information. Previously, she led the Institute for Applied Economics at the Los Angeles Economic Development Corporation. In that role, she oversaw all economics functions of the company, including economic forecasts, regional industry analyses, workforce development analysis, and policy studies across regional issues, producing numerous studies, reports and presentations for government agencies, nonprofit associations, industry leaders and legislative bodies. Earlier in her career, Dr. Cooper was co-founder of a start-up in Hong Kong focused on automating equity transactions and manufacturing computer accessories, ultimately expanding production into China and distributing products globally. She was co-founder of the first authorized Apple Computer retailer in China. She has also taught at California State University, Long Beach and at the Pepperdine Graziadio School of Business and Management. Dr. Cooper holds a Ph.D. in Economics from the University of Southern California with a specialty in economic development. Dr. Robert Kleinhenz Economist and Executive Director of Research Beacon Economics, LLC Robert A. Kleinhenz, Ph.D. is economist and executive director of research at Beacon Economics, LLC and one of California's leading economists. Dr. Kleinhenz has nearly 30 years of experience analyzing the U.S. and California economies and the economies of California's many diverse regions. Prior to joining Beacon Economics, Dr. Kleinhenz served as chief economist of the Kyser Center for Economic Research at the Los Angeles County Economic Development Corporation (LAEDC) where he conducted research on and produced economic forecasts for the U.S., California, and the Southern California region. While at LAEDC, he was a much sought after specialist for his deep knowledge of the economy and industries in both the state and the counties of Southern California. Earlier in his career, he was deputy chief economist at the California Association of Realtors, where he focused on housing market and consumer research. He also taught economics for over 15 years, most recently at California State University, Fullerton. A leading voice in Los Angeles and beyond, Dr. Kleinhenz is an in-demand speaker who regularly presents to business, government, and nonprofit organizations. A well-known media commentator, he has been interviewed on CNBC and NPR and is regularly quoted in major national dailies including the Wall Street Journal. He is a member of the National Association for Business Economics, and its Los Angeles Chapter (past president, past treasurer), and the Real Estate Research Council of Southern California (current executive board member and treasurer). Dr. Kleinhenz holds a Ph.D. in economics from the University of Southern California with a specialty in urban and regional economics. He also holds a master's degree in economics from USC and a bachelor's degree in economics from the University of Michigan. Dr. Jose Martinez Associate Professor, Accounting, Finance and Economics California State University Dominguez Hills Jose Martinez, Ph.D., received his bachelor's degree in economics from California State University, San Marcos and his master's and Ph.D. in economics from the University of California, San Diego. He is currently teaching microeconomics and macroeconomic principles and international business in the Accounting, Finance, and Economics Department at CSUDH. His research interests are labor economics, applied micro, migration, crime, and time series econometrics. Dr. Martinez also is co-director of the CSUDH Economics Institute. Dr. Fynnwin Prager Assistant Professor, Public Administration California State University Dominguez Hills Fynnwin Prager, Ph.D., is co-director of the Economics Institute at CSU Dominguez Hills, College of Business Administration and Public Policy. Previously, he was a postdoctoral research associate at USC’s Price School of Public Policy and Center for Risk and Economic Analysis of Terrorism Events (CREATE), and he remains affiliated with the center. He received his Ph.D. in policy, planning, and development from the Price School. His research has focused on the policy and economics of disasters, particularly environmental and terrorism policy, and the impacts to regional economies and transportation systems. Dr. Prager’s dissertation focused on climate policy, and used Computable General Equilibrium modeling to analyze the economic and distributional impacts of US federal emissions trading policy. He has also worked on similar assessments of California’s Global Warming Solutions Act (AB32)and co-founded Carbon Retirement, an innovative London-based carbon offsets company.
